Why does the USPS offer discounts on postage?
As part of the USPS drive to change from manual handling to automated
handling, new equipment has been installed that reads barcodes and rapidly
sorts mail of all types. As an incentive to businesses and organizations,
they offer discounts to those who have prepared the mailing to the
specifications of the automation equipment.
How much
can I save?
You can save money any
time you mail 200 pieces or more by using our mailing services. A one-ounce
letter, prepared for automation, can be mailed for as little as 22.5 cents
standard (bulk) class or 32.4 cents first class. Qualified non-profit entities can mail for as little as
12.7 cents. These represent
potential savings of as much as 50% when compared with non-automated postage
rates.
Can I get
postage discounts on my own?
Yes, if you have the software to certify the digital mailing list, the
hardware to format the addresses and apply barcodes according to
specifications, a Standard mailing permit and the expertise of the 1000+ page
USPS regulation manual! If you
use us instead, we do all the work and you get to keep the postage savings!
What
costs are involved?
Although you receive the discount on postage, you pay other costs for mailing
services which compensate us for our investment in hardware and software, and
for the labor involved in preparation. These costs include preparation and
certification of your digital list, presorting for the lowest postage rates,
barcoding, directly imprinting the addresses on your mailing piece and
delivery to the Post Office. For example, a 2000 piece newsletter will cost
around 12¢ per piece in mailing services but you can receive that much or
more in postage discounts. Plus, your staff won't spend any time on the
mailing at all. When you consider all the costs, you generally come out ahead
paying for mailing services and thus taking advantage of the postage
discounts.
What do I
need to provide to Frontier Printers?
Basically, we need your mailing list in a digital format. If you have a
customer database we can help you convert it to a database for a small fee.
If you are creating a database, you should check with us first. We can
provide you with advice that will make it easier for your and less expensive
too. The most common format is ASCII comma-delimited, but files such as MS
Office Excel work just fine. We are happy to assist with preparation of your
database because it helps us provide you with better service. We’re the
experts so just ask us for help!
